Jacob Have I Loved
The story The story is about one of two sisters. Louise and Caroline. Louise is very different from Caroline. Caroline is frail, sweet, pretty, and expected to leave the island for the mainland because none of the people on the island are like her. She is different. Louise is an island girl. She loves the ocean and doesn't mind getting dirty. She even asks her father if she can go fishing with him, which is pretty much unheard of on Rass Island. Louise thinks that Caroline is better than her because she's smarter and more musical. She feels she has stolen from her everything. Her friends, schooling, even her own mother and best friend, Cal.
Great conflict comes between these sisters for their whole lives. This is a very good story for anyone. I myself loved it.
Jacob Have I Loved was written by Katherine Paterson in 1980 and won the Newbery Award Medal in 1981. She was born in China, the daughter of US missionary parents, and spent most of her childhood there. Her four childrent and their friends have provided her with some of the subject matter for her sharply ovservant stories of family life. She lives with her family in Barre, Vermont.
